The plants are symbiotic with sponge and have a hard sponge texture. The branches are compressed or terete with many small holes, which divaricate irregularly, and unite to each other. The color of this seaweed is usually green, but in shady environments it is dark purple. This species is prostrate and forms loosely intricate clumps on rocks, dead coral and gravel in lower intertidal to subtidal zones along shorelines with calm to moderate wave activity.
