The plant forms a hollow sphere that can be up to approximately 4-5 cm in diameter and is composed of one layer of distinctly thick, large hexagonal cells. The top portion of the plant tends to break when the plant grows up. This species is found on rocks or amongst other seaweeds in lower intertidal to subtidal zones along moderately wave exposed shorelines.
